COBRA Insurance Coverage

By: Andrew Mills

During the mid 1980s “Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act” was set up by Federal Laws and was designed as coverage for people who were dismissed from work due to no fault of their own. These laws were made to help people with medical expenses during times of lay offs, strikes, decreased work hours and so on and so on. The policy will provide coverage for up to 18 months. In some cases the policy will extend coverage for up to 36 months.

But 18 months is the most common, this gives the policyholder enough time to decide on medical coverage for his family. Cobra was put into affect under the “Employee Retirement Income Security Act, the Internal Revenue Code” and a few other sources that would provide some additional room for Group Policies. If the group policy is canceled for any reason the policyholder would be able to request coverage.

Most employers will offer some sort of group insurance plan for, the reason for the group policies is that the employer covers many, usually a large number, of employees on the same policy. Therefore if you have not been discharged from work because of misconduct like sexual harassment, missing too much work, or other things that are grounds for termination, you will most likely qualify for COBRA.

If you have been dismissed from work because of whatever reason that is not your own fault or that you had no control over your employer is obligated to tell you of what COBRA offers and how you can apply for it. But not only does the policy include you as the employee it also includes your family.

Basically COBRA is a policy that offers medical help for those who have been dismissed from their job due to reasons beyond their control and the family members of the policyholder. This policy is similar to other policies and someone, usually the holder of the policy, could be eligible for co-payments. The policy is also good for many people if they are between jobs. Also is good for those who have recently graduated from college and pending group policies.

Health insurance policies are readily accessible whether it is to single policyholders, groups, joint policy plans, HMOs, managed care or others. Some policies have higher premiums, while the others may not. However, there are few policies that adhere to a network, therefore if you find out more concerning this plan, you may see that you will have to stay within a network to get the care you need. Thus, a strategy is setup by doctors and insurance providers to offer lower cost medical care to their patients; although, the patient is required to stay within the restricted doctor network.
